More crockpottery





I finished the baked beans and yep, some were burned. That’s what I get for leaving them in an extra half a day. Some were stuck to the side of the crockpot. Well, the plastic bag inside. You see, there are these plastic bags that are specifically made to fit inside crockpots. They help greatly in cleanup, even though they often break a bit. This time, not so much. I’m just happy the bag didn’t melt. Talk about your lessons learned. In future, if I need to reduce the liquid in a crockpot, I’ll take some out and put it in a pot and do that on the stove.

Speaking of crockpots, last week was “slow cooker week” on The Chew. Quelle ironic. They had a different recipe every day. You can get to the recipes this-a-way.

Above are videos showing a couple of them being made. They’re the only ones I can find. More irony, since they’re the two that look the most interesting to me. I never even thought about doing mac and cheese in the crockpot. I usually do it out of the box. Yeah, I know. So it’s prolly way overdue I make it more from scratch. The pot roast is rather like something Mom made, although she used broth and not wine. I will have to try it with the wine, though. I have several bottles around the house from which to choose.

No, I’m not an alky, even though I have mostly Irish ancestry. I’m not that much of a drinker. A glass of wine a couple times a month, maybe. I like to use wine for cooking, though I don’t do it often.

Why do I have so many bottles, then? It’s because of my travelling. As I went about the state on my quest to visit and photograph everything on the National Register in Florida, I also liked to see other stuff while I passed through. I decided to add visiting every winery in the state to my list of “things to do”. OK, not every one. Just the ones that grow their grapes and/or make the wine in Florida. As you can see by this map, there’s only about a dozen. I’ve visited about half of them so far. I do the free wine tasting at each one, then buy at least one bottle of wine as a souvenir.

Favorite? My first, the San Sebastian Winery in St. Augustine. I visited it several times well before deciding to go on my winery journey. It was great for Christmas shopping. I’d get a case of wine there, an assortment of fudge at Whetstone Chocolates and calenders at one of the Outlet stores. That covered all my gift-giving bases. And it was an excuse to visit St. Augustine at least once a year. Like I need an excuse. I’ve not had the wherewithal to do much gift-giving the last few years. Hopefully with the new job sitch, I’ll be able to do so again. I do miss giving gifts on Christmas, moreso than getting them.
